Everything you need, nothing you don’t – a straightforward guide to choosing the right ceiling fan, with a few product picks to help you along the way.
Room & Sizing
Choosing the Right Size Ceiling Fan for Your Room
Getting the size right is the most important decision you’ll make — a fan that’s too small won’t move enough air, and one that’s too large will feel overwhelming in the space.
Blade Span Guide
Blade span (measured tip to tip) is how ceiling fans are sized. Use this as your starting point:
| Room Size | Recommended Diameter |
|---|---|
| Up to 10m2 (eg small bedroom) | 44″ or smaller |
| 10m2 – 20m2 (eg main bedroom) | 44″ – 52″ |
| 20m2 – 40m2 (eg large lounge) | 52″ – 60″ |
| 40m2 + (eg large open plan) | 60″ + or multiple fans |
Spirit DC Range – Showcasing the visual impact of the 44″ overall diameter size with a 3m x 3m bedroom.
Spirit DC Range – Showcasing the larger 52″ diameter fan also in a 3m x 3m bedroom.
Ceiling Height
The ideal fan blade height is 2.1 – 2.4m from the floor — low enough to move air effectively, high enough to be safe and unobtrusive.
Ceilings under 2.4m – Choose a hugger or flush-mount fan, which sits directly against the ceiling with no downrod
Ceilings 2.4 – 2.7m – A standard mount with a regular downrod (15–30cm) works well
Ceilings 2.7 – 3.5m – Use a longer downrod to bring the fan down to the ideal height. These are typically available to purchase as an accessory and can be cut to size by your installing electrician.
Raked or vaulted ceilings – You’ll need a fan rated for sloped ceilings; most fans support rakes up to 10–15°. For larger angles we can point you in the right direction if you contact us. With some models brackets are available to accommodate angles up to 45 degrees.
Indoor vs Outdoor Fans
Not all fans are built for every environment. Using an indoor fan outside can be a safety hazard and will void your warranty.
Indoor – Suitable for bedrooms, living rooms, and any enclosed space (all fans are suitable for indoor use)
Outdoor Undercover – Safe for covered outdoor areas like alfresco, verandahs, and pergolas where the fan won’t be directly exposed to rain or elements
Wet Rated – Suitable for fully exposed outdoor areas; these are less common but important if your space is open to the elements
Australian note: Most covered alfresco areas need a damp-rated (outdoor undercover) fan at minimum. Check the product IP rating — IP44 or above is a good benchmark for outdoor use.
Motor Type
Motor & Performance: What Actually Moves the Air
The motor is the heart of a ceiling fan — it determines how efficiently the fan runs, how quietly it operates, and how long it lasts. There are two main motor types to understand. The vast majority of ceiling fans available today are powered by DC motor technology.
| AC | DC | |
|---|---|---|
| Energy Use | Standard | Up to 70% less than AC |
| Speed Settings | Typically 3 | Typically 6 |
| Noise | Can produce a hum at lower speeds | Near Silent |
Speed Settings & Control
Most AC fans offer 3 speed settings – low, medium, and high. DC fans typically offer 6, which gives you much better control, especially at the lower end where you want gentle airflow without noise.
Control options vary by model:
Wall controller – A dedicated wall switch, typically with a rotary mechanism to select speed
Remote control – Convenient and usually included with DC fans; allows speed, direction, and light control from anywhere in the room
Smart control – Wi-Fi enabled fans can be controlled via app or voice assistant (Google Home, Alexa, Siri). Useful if you want scheduling, automation, or integration with a smart home setup
Reverse Function (Summer/Winter Mode)
Most fans include a reverse function that changes blade direction:
Summer (counterclockwise) — Pushes air straight down, creating a wind-chill effect that makes you feel cooler
Winter (clockwise) — Draws air up and pushes warm air (which rises to the ceiling) back down along the walls, improving heating efficiency
It’s a small feature that’s easy to overlook but genuinely useful — particularly in Australian homes where the same room needs to feel comfortable across a wide temperature range.
Style & Aesthetics
Style & Aesthetics: Finding a Fan That Fits Your Space
A ceiling fan sits at eye level in the centre of a room — it’s one of the most visible fixtures in your home. The good news is that modern ceiling fans have come a long way from the generic timber-and-brass designs of the past. Today there’s a fan to suit virtually every interior style, and getting the aesthetic right is just as important as getting the performance right.
Modern & Minimalist
Clean lines, neutral finishes, and minimal ornamentation. Look for fans with slim blade profiles, matte white, black and integrated LED lighting rather than a separate light kit. These suit contemporary new builds and renovated homes well.

Light Options
Many ceiling fans come with an integrated light or the option to add one. Whether you need it depends on your room’s existing lighting setup.
Integrated light – Built directly into the fan body for a seamless look. Most modern fans use LED arrays with adjustable colour temperature (warm to cool white). A good choice if the fan is the primary light source in the room.
No light – The cleanest look if you have downlights or other ceiling lighting already doing the job. Removes visual clutter and often allows for a sleeker fan profile.
